About us

The Graduate Program in Biological Sciences (named until September 2014 as Graduate Program in Biology) at the Federal University of Goiás (PPGCB-UFG) started in December 1979, according to resolution 143/79 of the Coordinating Council Teaching and Research (CCEP). The creators of the Program were professors José Salum, Alberto José Centeno, and Fernando Luiz Kratz, who founded the first graduate program at ICB and also one of the pioneers at UFG.

The PPGCB belongs to the Institute of Biological Sciences (ICB) and is subordinate to the Dean of Graduate Studies (PRPG). Its objective and mission are to train and train professionals to work in higher education teaching, in scientific research, and the development of activities inherent to the area of Biological Sciences, aiming at scientific, human, social, and environmental progress. Specific objectives of the PPGCB are:

- Train human resources to work in the areas of biochemistry, genetics, pharmacology, physiology, morphology, biotechnology, cell biology, and molecular biology;

- Train critical subjects, capable of using the tools acquired during their courses to solve problems related to their areas of training;

- At the master's level, training subjects to work in higher education with the ability to use current didactic-pedagogical tools, using creativity to face the challenge of teaching and learning;

- Also at the master's level, training subjects who have a broad training base and which allows them to keep up to date on topics related to the large area of Biological Sciences.

- At the doctoral level, train teaching researchers capable of working in large research centers, develop projects, write scientific articles and propose solutions to problems related to the large area of Biological Sciences.

The PPGCB is organized in a Postgraduate Coordination as a deliberative body; a Coordination as the executive body of the Coordination, consisting of a coordinator, a sub-coordinator; commissions (Administrative, Scholarships, Selection) and a Secretariat, as a support body for coordination. All duties of the coordination and commissions are regulated by CEPEC Resolution no. 1075 2012.

Since its implementation in 1980, until December 2020, the PPGCB has awarded 519 masters and 91 doctors in different areas of Biological Sciences. Most of the masters and doctors trained by PPGCB work in federal and private higher education institutions, research centers, federal and state institutions such as IBAMA, the Health Secretariat and the Secretary of Education of the State of Goiás, regulatory agencies, companies in the environmental and health, guaranteeing a return on investment for the training of professionals in the area.

Currently, the Program is composed of 23 professors (20 in the permanent group, 2 in the group of collaborators, and 1 visiting professor) and 4 lines of research, which integrate the various research groups that work at PPGCB-UFG. These groups have been developing cutting-edge research, employing experimental techniques in the large areas of knowledge related to microorganisms, plants, and animals. UFG's PPGCB is composed of professors from UFG, UFMT - Campus Barra do Garças and EMBRAPA - National Research Center for Rice and Beans (CNPAF) and currently has a partnership with the University of Bologna (Italy), through of the collaboration of prof. Dr. Andrea Tarozzi.

The PPGCB has two areas of research:
1. Pharmacology and Physiology
2. Biochemistry and Genetics

These areas of concentration are subdivided into 4 research lines:
1. Pharmacology
2. Morphology and Physiology
3. Biochemistry
4. Genetics
